President Donald Trump has menaced to enforce duties as high as 200% on European wines, sparkling wines, and other intoxicating drinks, one day after the EU revealed counteracting duties against the U.S.
Trump expressed on his “Truth Social” platform that these duties would be put into effect if Europe advances with burdening American bourbon.
“If they don’t drop the duties right away, the U.S. will be compelled to put a 200% duty on all Wines, Sparkling Wine and Alcohol originating from France and the European Union,” Trump shared Thursday morning. “Big victory for U.S. wine and sparkling wine firms!”
The European Commission, the EU’s administrative division, expressed on Wednesday that duties would be collected starting April 1 on a variety of U.S. items valued at up to 26 billion euros ($28.4 billion), including vessels, bourbon whiskey, and motorcycles. These duties, along with those revealed by Canada, were revealed on Wednesday in reaction to Trump’s steel and aluminum duties.
