Urgent Update! Watcher Guru, a well-known crypto news source boasting a significant audience, has been hacked! Their X (previously Twitter) profile was jeopardized, and some unapproved, shall we say “intriguing,” material was distributed across their platforms.
They’ve cautioned their almost 3 million supporters, stating they’re managing the situation, probing the violation, and have already reached out to X support. They’ve reinforced security with two-factor verification and are implementing additional safeguards.
The offenders disseminated a captivating, yet completely false, speculation concerning SWIFT (the payment system) allegedly collaborating with Ripple to utilize XRP for global transactions. Watcher Guru promptly explained that this was NOT them, but the undertaking of the offenders who had assumed control of their profile.
Since Watcher Guru employs a bot to automatically relay X posts to their other social media platforms such as Telegram, Facebook, and Discord, the fabricated information propagated swiftly.
The positive aspect is, they’ve erased all the unapproved posts and protected the profile. They’re collaborating with X for a comprehensive inquiry.
**What caused this?**
Watcher Guru presumes it all commenced with a questionable X link dispatched to their Telegram profile on March 5th. They surmise it was a social engineering tactic to acquire entry to the profile. The link appeared “unusual,” with a peculiar “token” query string that’s not typically a component of X links. So, remain cautious, crypto community!
We didnt give it a lot of thought since it was a formal connection, but we texted X’s head of cybersecurity, @cstanley, just to be safe. However, there was no answer,” the crew mentioned.
As of now, Watcher Guru hasn’t identified who is responsible for the intrusion or how they carried it out. However, they pledge to strengthen security to thwart future assaults and will keep everyone updated. Even with two-factor verification enabled on both profiles, the cybercriminals were still able to access them. While they cannot definitively state whether it is related to that suspicious connection, another cryptocurrency news source, DB News, encountered a comparable incident. A plethora of X profiles have been compromised in the last several years. Dior’s Instagram was taken over in February to promote a bogus Dior meme currency on Solana (SOL). It reached a market valuation of $280,000 before the post was taken down, and subsequently plummeted by 90%. These profiles are frequently utilized to promote meme currencies that appear shortly after the hackers publish.
